Mechanical Rotating Solutions recently installed a DAB 3NKV 15/4 Vertical multistage centrifugal in-line pump set servicing its coal mining client’s complete grid of changing rooms, kitchens and washing rooms after the client reported repeated failures and high electricity use.
Mining ablution and change house facilities coupled with its provision of potable and palatable water often goes unnoticed in a mining environment as energy and operational savings are almost always focused on the operations side of a mine.
The Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996 stipulates that the employer must provide and maintain suitable and adequate change houses to enable employees who perform work involving hazardous substances to change into working clothes at the start of their shift. It further indicates that employees should be able to wash and change their clothes at the end of their shift and that there should be facilities to enable employees who perform work involving hazardous substances to wash their hands and faces before eating any meals at work. Lastly, a mining changing houses must include readily available latrine facilities, within a reasonable distance from each working place.

Mining and mines, in general, is one of the biggest employers in South Africa and with such a large amount of workers comes big water and energy bills. The amount of staff during each shift at the mines are generally quite big which calls for rather large facilities that are used simultaneously on completion of a shift putting immense strain on the pumps and water supply servicing these areas. Says Franscois Steenkamp CEO of Mechanical Rotating Solutions.
“One of the biggest problems supplying water under pressure to such a large area is “water hammering” whereby the flowrate of fluid in the pipe changes drastically. It can cause very high pressures in pipes, very high forces on pipe supports, and even sudden reversals of flow leading to burst pipes, damaged supports and leakage at joints. Not only does the DAB system address this issue but it also incorporates excellent energy savings (up to 60 %), less maintenance, reduced pump wear and a substantial saving in water usage. The NKVE series of vertical multistage centrifugal pumps are suitable for medium to large user water systems that can be used for hot water and cooling water circulation, firefighting and washing systems, drinking water supply and filling of pressure vessels, sprinkler, and watering systems and water purification systems.”
Not only is the NKVE pump sets MRS solution of choice for change rooms it is also ideal for pressure sets, boiler feed and hot water circulation, conveying condensate and cooling water, firefighting and washing systems, supplying drinking water and feeding pressurised tanks, sprinkler and spraying irrigation systems.
Excellent product support from DAB Pumps South Africa means that a variety of sets such as the sets with MCE/P inverters are readily available built in the standard version with two, three, or four centrifugal electric pumps, completely assembled on a galvanised steel base, tested and ready for installation. Complete with isolator and check valves for each pump, suction and delivery manifolds, expansion vessels, pressure sensor, on-pump inverter, protection control unit.
