Cement is one of the most commonly used materials in manufacturing and therefore one of the most abundantly produced materials in the world. When failure of the conveying systems that transports the raw materials causes production to halt you need a specialist partner to make sure that your productivity is restored as soon as possible.
Mechanical Rotating Solutions (MRS) was contacted by a Pretoria based cement manufacturer after repeated failures on its vertical roller mill conveyor belt. “Cement manufacturing is a complex process that starts with mining and then grinding raw materials including limestone and clay. Primarily, conveyor belts are exposed to excessive wear as a result of the materials they transport and the friction generated from the rough sliding and impact of these hard and corrosive materials.” Says Franscois Steenkamp, Director of MRS. “Our Pretoria based client reported that their conveyor skirting kept on tearing loose meaning that the lime being transported was no longer guided on the moving belt. Damaged conveyor skirtings also determines if the material stays confined to the belt or escapes creating a dirty loading area.”

MRS set about repairing the damaged conveyor belt using Belzona 2221 MP Fluid Elastomer, a 2-part polyurethane resin designed for the repair and coating of rubber and metal components, as well as casting of new components. “The exceptionally tough operating conditions that prevail in the cement industry means that a variety of demands are placed upon the conveyor belts used. Thanks to our many years of experience in repair composite materials and industrial protective coatings we were able to repair our client’s vertical roller mill conveyor belt in a very short period of time whilst simultaneously ensuring a marked lifespan and productivity increase.
Belzona 2221 MP Fluid Elastomer is a flexible rubber repair material that makes cost effective repairs possible and is designed for applications where durability and elasticity are required. It is easy to mix and apply by brush or by pouring without the need for specialist tools and will cure at room temperature, eliminating the need for hot work and vulcanisation.
Elastomer resists tear, impact, abrasion, weathering and a wide range of chemicals which makes it a suitable solution for not only conveyor belts but also, expansion joints, valve seals, pumps and impellors.
